Homemade Christmas

Summary: Are you looking for something other than Christmas from a box? Despite what many people think, there is nothing wrong with a homemade Christmas. Here are some great ideas for helping you have a more frugal, and personal, Christmas season.

What is it about the holidays? Why is it that during the holidays, despite everyone's best intentions, we seem to focus on the amount of money that we are going to spend rather than on whom we are going to spend our time with? Why not take the money that you would spend on gifts and invest it in something else like possibly traveling to see the rest of your family and friends? Rather than going with a Christmas you purchased from a store, why not go with a homemade Christmas instead?

A homemade Christmas does not just entail making your own Christmas decorations, though that is definitely a part of it. There are so many different things that a person can do. If you are interested in saving some money with the whole homemade Christmas theme, then you are going to want to take a look at these ideas. Use them singly, or in any combination that you wish, and be ready to be amazed by how much money you save.

  • Gifts. There are all kinds of gifts that could be homemade. Some examples of different gifts that you could make yourself, and thereby save a ton of money, are things such as pictures, sweaters, and even books. All it really takes is some time and a little bit of creativity. Quite often, a homemade gift is going to be much more appreciated than a store-bought gift.
  • Food. Food can easily become one of the easiest (and most inexpensive) gifts you could give someone. One of the ways to use food as a gift would be to make a gift basket or bag. You can do this by using things like chocolate bars, crackers, cheese, grapes, fruit and other items. You could put these into either a basket or a small bag.
  • Ornaments. If you like the Norman Rockwell look, there is nothing that can help achieve that more than homemade ornaments. Everyone knows about how to make garland from popcorn and thread (simply use a needle and some thread to string it up). Some of the other ideas would also include candy canes, gingerbread men (using real cookies), little bells, and even ribbons. All that you really need is just a little bit of imagination.
  • Decorations. Decorations are a little different from ornaments. If you would like to make some of your own decorations, you could try making some things like a homemade wreath or table centerpieces (pinecones are a great thing to use for this) and many other things. This, like anything else, is going to take a little bit of imagination. Have fun and experiment—you are sure to like your results.
